Gaetano Donizetti’s life ended up in complete madness just like some of the most famous characters in his works. Donizetti alive provides an individual and collective pathway for every every member of the audience to explore the fragmented and crazy mind of the genial Maestro from Bergamo, who at the end of his days, meets the very characters he has created, ghosts from the past which come back to haunt him. They are all there at the same time, occupying the rooms of his distorted memory: desires, works done and undone, encounters, journeys, fragments of dreams and imaginary yet authentic events all shot through with his spirit and personality. In such a scenario Donizetti’s music is present yet filtred, full of hints of the meaning of a life led but free from the constraints of a long-lost past. Vocal sequences, melodic lines, harmonious utterances sometimes true to the original, elsewhere distorted produce disturbing moments, as what is known collides with the new, the different and the contemporary.
